The Importance of Signs

A few days back, my daughter helped me with the laundry. She moved the freshly washed clothes from the washing machine to the dryer. As soon as we started the dryer, she was mesmerised by its spinning.

The dryer tends to get hot, so I cautioned her with my words requesting for her to step away from it. She did not budge (surprise, surprise). I warned her again a second time, telling her it might be dangerous if she remained there and still she did not move an inch. Then I pointed to the ‘hazard’ sign on the dryer, and asked if she remembered seeing a similar sign near the construction area we passed by recently. She walked away immediately as she knew exactly what I was talking about.

Our body is one with the soul (CCC362). The body that we are blessed with helps us to understand the invisible and the unknown. Just like how the sign on the dryer stirred an internal response within my daughter, so will the signs that were handed down by Jesus for us – the Church – move us, and lead us to know God – Whom is Spirit (CCC 370).

The sacraments are signs of the church. CCC1131 states, “The sacraments are signs and instruments that convey grace.” Receiving the sacraments through our bodies engage both the physical (body) and spiritual (soul) dimensions of human existence.

I wonder how we can remind ourselves to receive these great treasures that Jesus has given us? Our Lord desires us with such a great love!

Shall we not let our Good God wait?

Signing off!

Love,
Melissa
